UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan dies

The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who had accompanied his country’s meteoric rise on the international scene for the past two decades, has died, the Emirati authorities announced on Friday May 13.

The government has decreed “an official mourning and the flags lowered” for 40 days, the official WAM news agency said. The late head of state had been rare in public since a stroke in January 2014.

The Burj Khalifa named in his honor

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan was also emir of Abu Dhabi, the richest of the emirates. He had previously been crown prince to his father, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, from 1969 to 2004. He owned several football clubs, including Manchester City, one of the best teams in the world, New York City FC and ES Troyes AC, in France. The Burj Khalifa, the tallest structure in the world, which rises to 829.8 meters, is named in his honor.

According to Forbes, he is the second richest man in the Persian Gulf and the 17th richest man in the world. His fortune is estimated at more than 18 billion euros. According to the Panama Papers, Sheikh Zayed owned several properties worth an estimated nearly 1.5 billion euros in London, through companies based in the British Virgin Islands.

Joe Biden hailed ” Memory “ the President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, “a true partner and friend of the United States”. “We will honor his memory by continuing to strengthen the ancient relationship between the governments and people of the United States and the United Arab Emirates”the US president said in a statement, presenting his “condolences” after the death of the 73-year-old leader.
