While he will be showing The Flash in what will be his last performance of Batman, Ben Affleck recently explained the reasons for this abandonment. His experience during Justice league was the main cause.
Batmobile’s last ride
Actor Ben Affleck to bring his Batman costume out of the closet on the occasion of The Flash next year, almost 4 years after putting it away following the film Justice League, released in 2017. We learned some time ago that the film centered on the fastest superhero in the DC team (and in the world) would include in its ranks two incarnations of the dark knight, that of Michael Keaton (Batman then Batman: The Challenge by Tim Burton) and that of Ben Affleck therefore.
About this, the 49-year-old actor confided in a few days ago, and decided to bow out on his role. A decision that comes as Keaton’s presence in The Flash foreshadowed the opening of a multiverse, and that Robert Pattinson recently took up the baton of the batman, which he will play on March 4, 2022 in The batman.
Affleck was justified by the fact that his return for the few scenes he shot for the Snyder Cut as well as those in the film The Flash were a very nice conclusion to his experience with his character.
I never said anything like that … but maybe my favorite Batman scenes, and my interpretation of Batman, are in this movie (The Flash). When I went to shoot my scenes it was really fun, satisfying and rewarding. And I even ended up saying to myself, ‘Wow, I think I finally got it …’ “
“It was just the worst experience”
But the actor also spoke in a recent interview for the Los Angeles Times about another filming experience, that of the unloved. Justice league, the earlier version of Zack Snyder released in 2017. And according to him, it was a “bad experience“, so much so that it marked a turning point in his career as the vigilante of Gotham. He explains:
It was really Justice League that was the last straw for me … It was a very bad experience because of a stack of different things: my own life, my divorce, being too far from mine , to have calendars jostling, and then the personal tragedy of Zack (who lost his daughter during production, causing her to leave). And then the reshots …
We know that his divorce from actress Jennifer Garner in 2015 deeply marked him, and plunged him into alcohol. He had also qualified this rupture as his “biggest regret“.
Affleck then continued on this ordeal “horrible“:
It was just the worst experience. It was horrible. It was everything I didn’t like about this job. This is actually the moment when I said to myself: “I will not do this again!”
That’s part of what kept him away from his character as Bruce Wayne for the sequel, and the movie. The batman, which he had to embody and direct, now under the leadership of Matt Reeves.
Making The Batman is a good example of what I didn’t want to do anymore! I looked the project in the face and ended up realizing that I wasn’t going to be happy doing something like that (…) I probably would have loved doing it at 32. But that’s when I started to realize it wasn’t worth it. It allowed me to reorient myself and recalibrate my priorities. “
Currently showing in the film The Tender Bar directed by Georges Clooney, Ben Affleck will therefore bring out the cape one last time on the occasion of his jubilee for The Flash, November 4, 2022.
