► The kyiv region evacuated by Russian forces
The Ukrainians have regained control of the entire Kyiv region after the withdrawal of Russian forces, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Ganna Maliar announced on Saturday. A series of explosions shook the city of Odessa on Sunday April 3. No casualties are to be deplored in this main port of Ukraine, on the Black Sea, according to the Ukrainian army. It is a rocket attack, said in a press release an officer of the southern regional command, Vladislav Nazarov.
The entire eastern coast of the country, from the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014, to the pro-Russian separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in the Donbass region (East), is occupied by Russian forces, except for part of the city of Mariupol, where they are still encountering resistance from the Ukrainian army.

A strategic port in the southeast of the country, on the Sea of Azov, Mariupol remains besieged and pounded relentlessly. At least 5,000 people have died and 160,000 civilians are still believed to be stranded, according to Ukrainian sources.

Russian forces also continue “to partially block the city of Kharkiv”the second city of Ukraine, located in the East, where industrial and residential areas are the target of artillery fire, according to the staff of the Ukrainian army, which however notes a decrease in their intensity.
► A still uncertain human toll
No precise and recent assessment of the civilian victims is available, but it obviously reaches several thousand people.
Militarily, the ranges are extremely wide. Russia acknowledged last week the death of 1,351 soldiers for 3,825 wounded, the first figures for more than three weeks. Western sources speak in unison of several thousand dead on the Russian side, kyiv even going as far as 12,000 combatants killed. On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned March 12 “about 1,300” soldiers killed, a number that is probably very underestimated.

On the refugee side, the conflict has already forced more than 4.1 million Ukrainians to flee their country, according to the UN. In total, more than ten million people, more than a quarter of the population, have had to leave their homes, either by crossing the border to take refuge in neighboring countries, or by finding refuge elsewhere in Ukraine. The UN estimates the number of internally displaced persons at nearly 6.5 million.
