Coogler was arrested and handcuffed after having gone to the Bank of America to complete a transaction on Jan. 7, according to the Atlanta police report. The 35-year-old director (who was then wearing a hat, sunglasses and a COVID face mask) came to the counter and handed the cashier a withdrawal slip with a note written on the back that explained: “I would like to withdraw $12,000 in cash from my checking account. Please do the money count elsewhere. I would like to be discreet.”

The person in charge of the counter, however, misinterpreted the situation and considered, fairly quickly, a robbery attempt, especially since the amount of the transaction exceeded 10,000 dollars. The latter therefore triggered an alert notification, and then informed her boss that she suspected a robbery attempt. Subsequently, four Atlanta police officers arrived at the scene and arrested two of Ryan Coogler’s colleagues, who were waiting for him outside the bank, in a car with the engine running. After verifying the identity of the director and his bank account, however, the officers released them all.
