SSE Plan to Triple Renewable Energy by 2030

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) explained that global warming increased global temperatures. Additionally, statistics tabulated a 0.8 degrees Celsius increase in the last 100 years. Conversely, extreme weather calamities like hurricane formation, floods, and wildfires are linked to global warming. Thus, several states were necessitated to institute measures that minimize carbon emission. The measures include taxing diesel and petrol automobiles, minimizing carbon fuel imports and production, and instituting an Emission Trading System for different states.

On the other hand, many countries have led to embracing renewable energy production by establishing a significant number of wind turbines and installing solar panels. The SSE, a U.K. energy company, stated its plans on tripling its wind energy production by 2030 in support of the shift from fossil fuel to renewables. Consequently, the energy company aims to produce the most considerable wind power by 2026. According to SSE, the company is yet to decide to invest in the Dogger Bank wind facility that is estimated to produce 3.2GW of wind power. The wind farm will supply approximately 4.5 million homes with electricity by 2026.

As the global shift from fossil fuel to renewable takes root, the company plans to invest £7.5bn in renewable power production. The company’s plan also falls within the government’s vision of building profitable offshore wind farms to generate power that can be supplied to every household in the U.K. The prime minister issued a 10-point climate proposal that seeks to fund renewable companies in the U.K., thus advance in the renewable sector. The SSE CEO, Alistair Phillips, noted that the prime minister’s plan would provide a smooth transition from carbon fuel to renewables, promoting a greener England.

According to SSE’s report, the company recorded £115m in profit from January to September. Moreover, the profit fell by 26% this year due to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic. However, Philip Davis stated that the company recovery plans are ongoing, and better results are yet to come as the company increases the investment on the wind farm. Additionally, Philip stated that the organization would minimize carbon emissions, stimulate the economy, and minimize the unemployment rate.

The prime minister stated that the state would invest £12bn in renewables, including private and public sectors. The plan aims at investing in electric vehicles, nuclear power, and carbon capture. Consequently, several renewable sectors pledged to invest in the U.K. power industry like the Equinor, Denmark’s Orsted, and Scottish power.

The world is going to experience the most versatile types of renewable energy

In most cases, renewable energy resources are installable far from the places that people live. For instance, wind resources in the United States exist in Texas and Oklahoma’s outskirts and the less populated regions of Central Midwest. Solar resources, on the other hand, can be developed in desert regions with scarce habitations. The U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) revealed that the establishment of renewable energy facilities to extract electricity would demand more transmission cables to minimize the national grids’ pressure in different regions.

Interests have been growing over the connection of renewable energy resources with populated areas through transmission lines, but the costs have halted further action. The infrastructure development projects require high capital, but they need the energy regulators and landowners to authenticate these projects’ implementation. The latest multibillion project tagged Australia–ASEAN Power Link is the most rigorous that the stakeholders are keenly observing. This project will bring together the biggest solar farm, the mega battery developer, and the most extended undersea electricity connection lines. Sun Cable will be supplying the connection cable in this $16 billion proposal.

The project will be running through 30000 acres of Australia’s Northern Territory and generate over 10 GW of solar energy. This electricity quantity is equal to that which would be evolving from over eight million rooftop PV panels. The battery company will be instrumental in developing the battery storage facility that can host 30 GWh to facilitate the disbursement of renewable energy 24/7. The storage facility will be over 100 times bigger than the Hornsdale Power Reserve that hosts 193.5 MWh worth of electricity. This facility will also exceed the Japan Buzen Substation, which provides 300 MWh of electricity.

The project estimates to utilize over 800 km of power line carrying 3 GW and supplying it all over the Northern Territory of Australia. The undersea lines which will be transmitting the power from there will run about 3700 km with 2.2 GW all the way to Singapore. These transmissions will become more extended than the 720 km high voltage, direct current (HVDC) coming from Norway to Britain, and will be in action come next year.

Hopefully, this mega project will begin the supply of electricity before 2028. The project will develop over 1500 employment opportunities in the initiation phase and an additional 350 jobs when operations take shape.

Since these projects are growing interest among energy developers, it is crucial to understand the expenses that come with transmitting renewables through long distances. The capacity to transmit electricity from renewables for long distances through areas like the Sahara Desert will help electrify remote areas. In conclusion, although the project is mega and will bring significant advantages, more challenges will come with it. Successfully overcoming these challenges will help in the transmission of electricity to the remote areas and minimize the outbreak of bushfires due to overdependence on the national grid.

Florida Proceeds with Plans for More Electric Vehicles

The adoption of electric vehicles to substitute cars and trucks that burn fossil fuels increases in popularity across the United States. This trend is due to escalating awareness to take environmental initiatives. The US government placed stringent measures to ensure automakers perform ecological tests on all vehicles manufactured.

Miami, Florida, plans to drastically enlarge its grid of electric vehicle charging terminals along major interstates and highways. Even during this epidemic, the state expenditure gears towards this expansion. The development funding comes from millions of dollars in criminal and civil penalties paid by Volkswagen, an automaker charged with defrauding environmental tests.

Recently, Ron DeSantis made public the release of $8.5 million for setting up new fast electric charging stations along interstates 75, 4, and 95. The plan is to build these stations this summer, and the stations are to cover more than 1,200 miles. This plan will promote the number of publicly accessible fast electric chargers within Florida by more than 50%.

Last month, DeSantis enacted a law that provided a foundation for electric charging stations at every service plaza on Florida’s traffic turnpike. These stations will be complete by September. DeSantis assured electric car owners not to worry about charging stations for their cars while using major highways. There is uncertainty about whether the project plans to establish electric charging stations within insolvent rural or urban areas.

The electric vehicle law decreed earlier this summer is part of a comprehensive scheme to encourage electric vehicles and intensifying charging stations across the states. Nikki Fried, the Democratic Agriculture Commissioner in the Florida Office of Energy, is pushing forth the scheme. There is anticipation that Fried aims to contend DeSantis while seeking reelection as governor.

Statistics from the State transportation officials indicate a projection of approximately 4.5 million electric vehicles on Florida roads by 2030. Currently, an estimate of 69,000 is under registration, according to the information from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Matt Alford said that new electric vehicles’ initiative aims to benefit the environment and enhance economic development. Alford is the executive director of Drive Electric, Florida, an association supporting electric vehicle ownership.

Florida received about $167 million under a global multi-billion criminal and civil settlement with Volkswagen. DeSantis said that the money is vital in expanding charging infrastructure along Interstate 10 in northern Florida and South and Central Florida areas. However, Terry Travis noted that electric charging stations along the highways and interstates are of no benefit to marginal communities. Travis added that it is more helpful to set up apparatus within the neighborhood to benefit people who cannot charge a vehicle overnight like in a single-family house.

The use of renewable energy will save the natural world or hurt it

The fast transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy is essential when dealing with climate change. To build solar wind turbines, solar panels, and other required materials essential in developing renewable energy infrastructure. If not correctly done, the acquisition of material to develop renewable energy infrastructure may destroy the ecosystems and the species.

In today’s research publication, there have been a mapping of potential mining areas globally and examined how they vary with biodiversity conservation sites. In an analysis, it was found that renewable energy production will increase the dangers in the conservation sites for biodiversity for different plants and animals.  It is correct to assume that mining of renewable minerals may lead to additional damage to the natural environment more than the climate change that researchers predict in some world regions.

Australia is becoming a leader in the extraction of materials to develop renewable energy and have a mission to a low-carbon world. There is a need to manage our environment from being harmful to the mining process. Now, about 17 percent of the total global energy consumption comes from renewable energy. To reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses, the development of renewable energy sources must increase. The development of renewable energy infrastructure involves the excavation of the metals and other minerals, which include

  • Graphite, cobalt, and lithium used in the formation of the storage battery
  • Titanium and Zinc are used in the development of Geothermal and wind energy.
  • Aluminum, Nickle, and copper are for the making of different sources of renewable energy.

The World Bank estimates increasing the production of the above minerals by more than 500 percent by December 2050. According to World Bank estimates, more than 3 billion tons of metals and minerals demand to construct solar, wind, and geothermal power, including the energy storage facilities needed to reduce global warming less than 2 degrees centigrade this century.

However, mining of the said minerals can destroy species and the environment. Mining destroys the surrounding environment and natural habitats by developing transport infrastructures such as railway and roads.

According to the mapping, we found the potential regions affected by mining. Our area of analysis involved 62,381 operational closed mines and pre-operational with 40 different types of material. The research found that mining will affect more than 50 million kilometers of the earth’s surface, which excludes 37 percent of Antarctica.

Ligado might endanger the future of a try-out space military navigation satellite

Executives managing a promising fresh satellite undertaking cautioned this week that Ligado Networks could endanger the future of the forthcoming-generation positioning, direction finding, as well as timing with the present global positioning system enterprise.

Arlen Biersgreen from the Air Force Research revealed to Air Force Magazine around September that as they interfaced with their workforce colleagues, the message they relayed was that there would be collateral damage if it went forward. The global positioning system was going to be damaged, as well as the work they were going to do.

The NTS-3 slate of the Space Force is a try-out attempt to give more dependable, correct location information through satellites that complement the global positioning system. It is among the three “Vanguard” study schemes to which the Air Force Department is throwing further concentration as well as resources due to the worth it could offer in America as a complete program. The foremost satellite shall dispatch in the late financial year of 2022 for a yearlong experimental run.

It was not transparent whether Ligado would attain permission to go further until after the NTS-3 operation, L3Harris representative Kristin Jones stated. Hence the abilities they showcased would be wedged down the way by the time they shall be a part of the functional set. Nonetheless, whether the NTS-3 try-out itself would be wedged would be any person’s guess during that stage.

NTS-3 would convey its signal by means of the L-band of the infrared spectrum, close to a portion of the spectrum whereby Ligado newly earned authorization of the 5G wireless network as well as the Internet-of-Things services. The pentagon robustly opposes to the Federal Communication Commission’s choice in Ligado’s favour, stating that the firm’s adjacent technology shall drown out global positioning system signals. That would affect ATMs, vehicle navigation systems, and everything that depends on global positioning system information to locate places and time on the universe, DOD contends.

Global positioning system satellites also hold sensors that perceive, locate, and publicize atomic explosions as a portion of the Nuclear Detonation Detection System. The work of Ligado would override NTS-3 in a similar way as the global positioning system satellites, Biersgreen stated.

The chair of PNT business advancement at L3Harris, Joe Rolli, stated that the firm is still working out on how a future NTS-3 set may evade the prospective signal intrusion that has flashed disputes at Capitol Hill and throughout federal firms. Rolli stated that they were all focusing on that for clarification purposes. Still, he assured that both the government and their technical teams were partnering to make sure the danger was being comprehended.
