at least 6 dead in an attack against a school in Kabul

A school for boys was the target of a violent attack this Tuesday, April 19 in Kabul, Afghanistan. Three explosions occurred at the Abdul Rahim Shahid school, located in the west of the capital.

The explosions occurred when students were leaving class in the middle of the morning, said a witness, who requested anonymity. The police claimed that these explosions “caused casualties among our Shiite brothers”delivering an initial death toll of six.

The neighborhood where this boys’ school is located is home to many members of the Shiite Hazara minority, marginalized for centuries and regularly persecuted in this Sunni-majority country.

In recent years and months, this neighborhood has been the target of several attacks claimed by the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), the regional branch of the terrorist group, which regards the Hazaras as heretics.

Since the Taliban took power last August and the withdrawal of American troops, security in Afghanistan has improved. However, attacks, mainly claimed by EI-K, still occur regularly in the country.
