Dera Sacha Sauda boss Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been condemned to 10 years in jail for the rape of two ladies supporters in 2002. The condemning came three days after the CBI court in Panchkula sentenced Singh in a 2002 rape case. Because of dangers of rising strains in parts of Haryana and Punjab over the sentencing, the judge was flown into the special court setup inside the Sunaria Jail in Rohtak in a helicopter. A three-level security ring was set up around the district Jail.
As per Zee News, During the hearing about arguments in the court before the sentencing, the prosecution requested most extreme punishment for Singh. The defense counsels have contended that Ram Rahim was a dynamic social worker– a contention that appears to have worked to support him as the court didn’t report the life imprisonment.
After Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was indicted in the rape case on August 25, the supporters of the Dera depended on violent protests over a few sections of Haryana and Delhi. No less than 38 individuals were murdered and more than 200 harmed in the violence.
The charges against Gurmeet Ram Rahim go back to 2002, when a Dera sadhvi composed a mysterious letter to then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee saying she was raped by the Dera Gurmeet Ram Rahim. In the letter, the sadhvi likewise blamed Gurmeet Ram Rahim for raping a few other female supporters inside the sprawling Dera grounds on the edges of Sirsa in the state of Haryana.
Following the letter, a case was registered by the CBI against the so called godman after claims of sexual abuse of the sadhvis. The sadhvis apparently made stunning allegations against Ram Rahim and two of them blamed him for having raped them by virtue of ‘immaculateness’. The hearing for the situation has been on since 2007 when the CBI recorded a chargesheet against the Dera boss.
